Queer as in cross stitch

I’ve been picturing a cross stitch design that has a beautiful rainbow as the backdrop, but it took me a little while to decide what saying I should put on it. I’m not totally certain where the now-ubiquitous phrase “Not gay as in happy, but queer as in fuck you” came from, but its antagonist declaration feels especially needed these days. Not that I don’t believe in love, but I don’t believe in the de-politicizing of queer, in the softening or sweetening of our history and identities. But a good, satisfying “fuck you” can also be joyful, especially when backed by a good ol’ gay rainbow. (Also timely, as we lost the creator of the rainbow flag, Gilbert Baker, yesterday)

Want your own queer as in cross stitch? I made up a basic pattern that you can use! It’s intended for a 3″ hoop using 14 count aida cloth, but it makes a cute circle so you could put it in a bigger hoop or frame. Enjoy!
